Runway Trains AI Models Illegally Using Videos from MKBHD, Nintendo, Disney and More

Runway AI launched their Gen-3 Alpha generative artificial intelligence (AI) capable of generating videos based on user proms a few weeks ago. Today 404 Media reports Runway AI has trained this AI model using illegally sourced video sources

Among the victims were Linus Tech Tips and YouTuber MKBHD where 1600 of his videos were used without permission. Videos from big brands like Disney, Nintendo, Rockstar Games and Netflix were also reported to be being used illegally. The video was downloaded without permission before being used for training.

No official statement was given by Neftlix and Disney regarding this report but MKBHD shared the link of the 404 Media report through his personal account. This is the second time his channel video is used to train AI. Last week EleutherAI was found using video transcripts from content producers such as MKBHD and Snazzya Lab to train their AI models. Among those involved in this issue is Apple who developed OpenELM using Eleuther AI open source data. Apple issued a statement Apple Intelligence was not trained using stolen data.

The need for public power to train more powerful LLMs is now causing the copyrights of creators to be arbitrarily stolen by AI companies. After being similarly threatened, OpenAI just this year licensed data with News Corporation and VOX Media.
