Samsung Launches Three New Camera Sensors – ISOCELL HP9, ISOCELL GNJ And ISOCELL JN5

Samsung has launched three new camera sensors namely ISOCELL HP9, ISOCELL GNJ, and ISOCELL JN5. All of them include the latest technology that is claimed to improve the quality of telephoto, ultrawide and selfie cameras. Further improving the camera performance of their upcoming smartphones drastically.

Samsung classifies the ISOCELL HP9 as the industry's first 200MP telephoto sensor developed for a smartphone. This sensor has a pixel size of 0.56-micrometer (μm) and a physical size of 1/1.4″. It is claimed to be able to receive more light then improve low light photography performance. This is certainly capable of producing clearer light effects with a sensitivity to light of up to 12% and a 10% better contrast performance compared to previous products. The sensor also has Tetra pixel technology that combines 16 pixels (4×4) into a 12MP 2.24μm sensor not only capable of producing sharper images but also an interesting bokeh effect. Powered by the Re-mosaic algorithm, the HP9 also offers 2X and 4X in-sensor zoom modes, then reaches up to 12x zoom when paired with a 3X zoom telephoto module without losing image quality.

Next is the ISOCELL GNJ which is a dual pixel sensor with 50 million 1.0μm pixels in a 1/1.57 inch optical format. It houses two photodiodes in a pixel unit that can be described as working like a pair of human eyes. It allows the camera to focus on the subject more quickly and accurately while capturing the details of the object with minimal blur, even in low lighting.

According to Samsung, ISOCELL GNJ is also equipped with a high-transmittance anti-refractive layer (ARL) and a high-refractive microlens that allows the sensor to collect light better. At the same time reducing unwanted reflections for a more natural low-light image production. In addition to using silicon oxide between pixels to reduce noise so that image details can be well preserved.

Finally, the ISOCELL JN5 that uses Dual Vertical Transfer Gate (Dual VTG) technology can solve image issues with lifeless colors and overexposure. With Leveraging Super Quad Phase Detection (Super QPD) the sensor can adjust focus by comparing vertical and horizontal phase differences. Next is able to capture fast-moving subjects with preserved and stable details. Coupled with Dual Slope Ain (DSG) Technology which is able to improve HDR and enable brighter and clearer color details to be produced.

Although the official announcement has just been made, the ISOCELL HP9 sensor has been used on Vivo X100 Ultra devices before. Vivo developed the 200MP telephoto sensor in collaboration with Samsung.
