The National Samsung Employees Union (NSEU) in South Korea started a strike starting July 8. Nearly 30,000 employees, equivalent to 20% of Samsung Electronics' workforce, will not work until their demands are met by the employer. Last month, NSEU had already held a one-day strike for the same reason.
A strike was organized to demand an increase in bonus payments based on performance and additional vacation days. It was done just a few days before the Unpacked event took place in Paris to launch the Galaxy Z Fold6, Z Flip6, Galaxy Watch7, Galaxy Buds3 and Galaxy Ring series.
Samsung is a chaebol that contributes over 22% to South Korea's GDP through its construction, shipping, electronics and military businesses. The strike organized by the union will definitely have an impact on Samsung Electronics, which is faced with the issue of losing its status as the world's largest smartphone manufacturer to Apple as well as increasingly fierce competition from Chinese manufacturers.
