The latest GDDR7 memory looks set to become more widely used soon, with SK hynix being the latest memory and storage chip developer to announce production of their own memory chips.
The company says that its GDDR7 memory chip comes with a data transmission speed of 32Gbps, much faster than the previous GDDR6 memory which comes with a speed of 24Gbps. SK hynix also says that this new memory is 50 percent more efficient in terms of electricity consumption compared to GDDR6.
When paired with a high-powered graphics card, SK hynix says their memory can process data at a rate of 1.5TB per second, which is comparable to 300 movie videos at a size of 5GB per second.
SK hynix also said that with the advancement of memory packaging technology, the data transmission speed of their GDDR7 memory chips could increase to 40Gbps in the future.
They also said that mass production will be done in the third quarter of this year. However, they did not say who is testing this memory, but our guess is that it is the usual technology development companies such as AMD and NVIDIA.
In the meantime, SK hynix also said that this GDDR7 memory will not only be used on consumer graphics cards. It will also be used by the automotive industry, companies that develop high-performance computers, data centers and so on.
