Softbank Takes Over Chip Developer, Graphcore

Softbank is now seen to have taken over another chip manufacturer, in an effort to strengthen its position in the artificial intelligence arena. The acquired firm is Graphcore, but the value of the acquisition has not been disclosed at this time.

For information, Softbank is also the owner behind the leading chip designer, Arm.

Graphcore has previously been talked about as the closest competitor for NVIDIA. However, it faces problems in terms of injection of funds to compete with other companies. With Softbank in place, the problem may now be resolved, allowing Graphcore to move to the next phase.

With demand and the industry's shift to the data center arena as well as artificial intelligence, let's see what Graphcore's next steps are in continuing to lead and compete in the chip development arena.
