Sony To End Optical Media Production – 250 Jobs Affected So Far

Sony is one of the few technology companies that still produces optical media such as CD-R, DVD-R and BD-R for consumers, but this seems to be coming to an end soon, as there are local reports saying that Sony will be laying off many 250 workers from their factory in Miyagi, Northeast Japan.

The Mainichi report says that as many as 250 jobs will be affected, as part of Sony's plan to close their CD-R, DVD-R and BD-R optical media production division. The same report says that the manufacturing of optical media for media purposes such as movies, television series and video games will not be affected, and only blank optical media will be discontinued.

Sony's choice to close part of its optical media business is seen as a bit of a surprise, but perhaps because demand for such media is seen to be dwindling, it may be a decision made due to a collapsing market.
