'GIG' used to be a term used by musicians to describe a live performance especially when it involved a small audience area or group. But now it also symbolizes the identity of employees who work flexibly without certain ties, further encouraging individuals to explore outside their respective comfort zones. No exception for Malaysia, the trend of gig-oriented jobs is not something new, in fact it is growing and known by all walks of life.
Realizing the implications of the gig economy and the need to protect workers' rights, a study has been conducted by MYCentre4IR to see what gig workers expect by focusing on the successes, challenges and opportunities involved.
Our society generally has the impression that gig workers consist of people who are not highly educated, but research from MYCentre4IR gave the opposite result. In a study that involved 1,500 respondents, it showed that on average almost 80% of gig workers were over 25 years old with 60% of them having a diploma or higher qualification.
Coupled with the challenging economy, a degree is no guarantee of getting a dream job. It was also stated that about 70% of the respondents who do part-time gig work because they already have a permanent job. Gig jobs on average contribute 37% to the total additional income of this group.
It was also stated that there are three main factors that motivate someone to choose a gig job, which are (i) freedom and flexibility in terms of time, place and autonomy to make their own decisions, (ii) accessibility offered by gig work and (iii) additional income in addition to work main. The majority of gig workers involved in this study admitted to being satisfied with their jobs. It's because gig workers have a healthy life and more time to spend with family and friends personally than when working full-time for a company or organization.
In fact, studies have proven that the gig economy has given them the opportunity to earn a productive and sustainable income. Also touched upon in this study is the initiative that the authorities can take to take care of their welfare which includes providing job opportunities, retirement plans, social protection and others.
Choosing to work in this economy or otherwise depends on each. However, a positive perception of this kind of economy should be applied in the community. Especially when it can benefit many parties. The cooperation of the authorities in empowering the economy is also needed in order to be utilized properly.
