The Government is Expected to Propose the Establishment of a Data Commission to Further Strengthen the National Data Policy



With a focus on bringing in investments from global giant technology companies such as Google, Microsoft, Meta ByteDance and so on, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo today presented a proposal to establish a Data Commission to enable the government to introduce a new national data framework and policy that is more comprehensive.


The Digital Ministry is reportedly planning to amend the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 in March 2025 to enable the development of this new commission not only to further tighten the protection of people's data, but also to drive the growth of data centers in the country.


According to Gobind, the workforce is aware that the spread of artificial intelligence technology is directly proportional to the development of data centers, and with the investment made by companies such as Amazon, Google and Microsoft it is important to ensure that the country remains relevant in this industry.


He further said that for now, Malaysia already has a Data Commissioner and also its own committee. In parallel with this, the development of a Data Commission that can be responsible for overseeing people's data in addition to ensuring that global technology companies can establish a foothold in Malaysia without so many problems.


In addition, Gobind Singh Deo was also seen officiating the signing of an agreement between Digital Nasional Berhad and CyberSecurity Malaysia to ensure Malaysia's 5G network remains secure.
