TNB Loss of Energy Income of RM3.4 Billion to Illegal Cryptocurrency Mining



The issue of illegal cryptocurrency mining is not a new issue. What will usually happen is that individuals or groups who are looking for a quick fortune is that they will find locations that are not inhabited or frequented by people, and will then steal the electricity of a nearby shophouse and use it to mine cryptocurrency which is usually very expensive. electricity.


Tenaga Nasional Berhad, the company responsible for supplying electricity to the entire country recently said that a review of incidents related to illegal cryptocurrency mining from 2018 to 2023, it has been found that the company suffered a loss of energy revenue of RM3.4 billion throughout those five years.


In the meantime, TNB is also seen to be facing losses in terms of electricity meter modification and illegal electricity meter connection which also causes the company to face losses of RM100 to RM200 million every year.


Recently, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, together with the Energy Commission and TNB have disposed of 2,022 seized items, consisting of bitcoin mining machines, electrical equipment not certified by SIRIM and the Energy Commission together with supply theft equipment electricity estimated to be worth RM2.2 million.


This seizure took place under Ops Ranjat conducted by the Energy Commission in five different uninhabited locations, where electricity meters were not installed, and caused a loss of RM1.3 million to the energy supplier.
