In China, one of the platforms that is currently growing rapidly and is used by many young people is Xiaohonshu, also known as RED in foreign markets, including in Malaysia. It offers a grid display form and integrates photo and video sharing through it.
Most recently, via the FinancialTimes, it was reported that Xiaohongshu has received an injection of new investment funds, valuing the social service at around $17 billion.
Xiaohongshu translates as "Little Red Book or Buku Merah Kecil", ready to accept investment from several parties, including Tencent, Alibaba and Temasek before. In 2023 alone, Xiaohongshu has over 312 million monthly active users, and it continues to grow in popularity month by month.
In Malaysia too, this application is actively used in the Chinese community to share various things in terms of holidays, food, fashion, education, and so on.
A more or less similar application was once tried to be marketed by Bytedance, namely Lemon8. However, it seems to have failed to reach the high number of active users like Xiaohongshu, even outside of China.
