8.8 Million PCs With AI Capabilities Marketed In Second Quarter 2024 Globally

The year 2024 is the year in which computers with built-in artificial intelligence (AI) functions begin to be marketed on a large scale. Intel began production of its Meteor Lake processing chips at the end of last year and Lunar Lake soon after. This year they are joined by Apple through the Apple M4 chip, Qualcomm through the Qualcomm Snapdragon X offering and AMD with the AMD Ryzen AI 300 processing chip.

The market analyst company Canalys has recently reported that in the second quarter of this year alone, approximately 8.8 million computers marketed globally, or 14 percent of the total number of PCs marketed are PCs with built-in AI capabilities.

According to them also, 40 percent of the computers marketed in this quarter are Microsoft Windows 11 laptops, which recently introduced their Copilot+ PC concept, which requires a computer to come with 40 TOPS AI processing capabilities and 16GB of DDR5 memory.

For the Microsoft Windows laptop segment, Lenovo, HP and Dell with their AI laptop offerings dominated total production this quarter, particularly with offerings such as the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x and ThinkPad T14s, HP Omnibook X14 and Dell XPS 13 powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon processing chips X.

As expected, Apple is seen leading the overall computer market with AI capabilities, where most of the laptops and tablets with M3 and M4 processing chips launched already come with AI capabilities. The only difference is that so far, this Apple product is still waiting for the arrival of Apple Intelligence to allow users to take advantage of the AI capabilities.

The Canalys report also expects that by the end of 2024, as many as 44 million AI PCs will be on the market, and in 2025, this figure will increase to 103 million units. After that, it is seen that AI capabilities will be integrated into all computers marketed to consumers.
