Fahmi Fadzil: Social Media Platform Operators Expected to Submit License Applications Starting This October



The opening of license applications for social media platform operators has already been opened in August this year, and is expected to come into force on 1 January 2025, where social media platforms that do not have a license to operate in Malaysia will be sued, or have their access blocked in the country this.


Today, Fahmi Fadzil, Minister of Communications was asked about the development regarding the licensing issue of this social media platform. He replied that discussions are still being held between the Communications and Multimedia Commission and the operators of these social media platforms, and expects that the first applications will be received around October and November this year.


According to him, the process of licensing social media platform operators has two different timelines. The first is the discussion with these platforms regarding the development of governance that will involve the government, social media platform operators, NGOs, academia and so on. These discussions are ongoing now, and are expected to be completed by the end of October.


At the same time, the social media platform operator license application process will continue, and will still be enforced by January 2025. He also said that the process to apply for this license for these companies will be processed within three to five working days only.
