Minister: Tesla Never Promised To Open A Factory In Malaysia

This week, there were reports saying that Tesla canceled its intention to open a factory in the Southeast Asian region, while also involving the name of Malaysia in the report. The Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry of Malaysia has now commented on the matter, stating that Tesla has never made a commitment to open a factory in Malaysia, at the same time showing that the changes in Tesla's plans do not have an impact in Malaysia.

Previously, in March 2023, Tesla simply announced the opening of a head office in Malaysia, setting up a Service Center, as well as establishing a network of electric vehicle chargers in Malaysia.

At that time, the conditions imposed on Tesla were that they had to install at least 50 fast charger units with a capacity of more than 180kWh, and ensure that at least 30% of the fast chargers were open for public use of vehicles of various brands. Besides that, the company also needs to work with at least 10 local companies in the development of the local electric car ecosystem.
