Samsung's HBM Memory Bought in Bulk by Huawei and Baidu Ahead of U.S. Blockade

The United States is believed to impose restrictions on the sale of HBM memory to China in the near future. This caused Chinese technology companies such as Huawei and Baidu to start buying Samsung's HBM memory in bulk according to a Reuters report.

The HBM2E memory is two generations behind the HBM3E technology that is used now but is still adequate for use in China where the development of chip technology is also several generations behind. There is no issue getting HBM2E supplies at this point as the latest chips released by NVIDIA all use more recent memory.

Huawei is said to use HBM2E memory for their own Ascend AI chip. In addition to the needs of AI chips, HBM memory is also used in other industries such as the development of communication satellites. If the HBM chip sales barrier is imposed, Samsung will be severely affected because 30% of their memory sales revenue is from China. This is not the news you want to hear because Samsung has just managed to increase their memory chip revenue again after memory prices have returned to normal.

The technological barriers imposed by the United States are to curb China's technological progress and advancement. The sale of NVIDIA and AMD's latest AI chips has been imposed since last year causing only less powerful versions to be sold. The reason given by America is that China is using their technology for military purposes which will pose a national security risk.
