As we've reported before, for Google Gemini to be as smart as Google Assistant it needs to rely on plugins. Unlike Microsoft Copilot which offers many plugins from third-party services, Gemini so far only has plugins by Google. In the future, Gemini will receive Spotify plugin support as well.
What can this plugin do? Funnily enough, this plugin is required if you want to use voice commands to ask Gemini to play music from Spotify. Otherwise you will be limited to YouTube Music only. The advantage of this plugin is the same as if you give a command to Google Assistant, it will not open the app but will continue to play the music you requested in the background.
For now, the Spotify plugin is still in testing. It is no longer offered to all users. I'm especially concerned that Gemini will have to rely on plugins because third-party plugins are usually not enabled by default and have to be enabled one at a time – making Gemini more cumbersome than Google Assistant.
