Telegram CEO Charged with Complicity in Crime and Now Banned from Leaving France

After nearly four days in custody by French authorities, Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has been released on €5 million bail (~RM 24 million) but has been charged with complicity in various crimes committed on the platform. He is now banned from leaving France pending trial.

As we reported a few days ago, Telegram allegedly refused to cooperate in several criminal cases involving certain individuals who spread pedophilia content, drug sales, online fraud, terrorist activities and illegal transactions.

Telegram has refused to hand over data that French authorities have requested to help the investigation. The messaging platform is also alleged not to moderate content labeled as dangerous. Despite being sued, Telegram remains of the opinion that they should not be blamed if the application is misused by users.
