After Google introduced the Pixel Watch and Samsung used Wear OS on the Galaxy Watch, Wear OS got better and better and could finally compete well with the Apple Watch that uses watchOS. One of the interesting features is the use of a map application, namely Google Maps which also supports Always-on Display mode. Recently, offline access support was introduced.
Offline map access has so far been limited to Android devices and only recently expanded to smartwatches. This feature was discovered by 9to5Google through the Google Maps app version 11.140.0701.W on the Pixel Watch 2. The offline map option is based on the Google Maps settings in the phone and will automatically be saved to the watch when charging and the watch is connected to WiFi. Total download data usage will also be displayed and users can easily remove any map they no longer wish to use.
If you want to save battery hours and data usage, Google Maps offline is a smart way to use it. It's just that for now, the Google Maps update is still not visible on other watches including the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra.
