Often times we hear the urban legend of social media apps spying on user conversations to display ads for a product. For a long time, experts said it was just a coincidence. But according to a 404 Media report today, your paranoia may no longer be imagination but reality.
Leaked Cox Media Group (CMG) company documents show the company's ability to listen to user conversations through smartphone microphones. The technology named "Active Listening" will listen to the conversation and then artificial intelligence (AI) will find relevant phrases for the purpose of advertising targets. CMG said they have done collaboration with CMG are Google, Facebook and Amazon.
Google has already released a statement that they have dropped CMG from their advertising partner program while Amazon said they have never or plan to work with CMG in the future.
Finally Meta says they are just a general marketing partner with CMG but are not involved in the use of Active Lisening as it violates company policy not allowing access to microphones for ad targeting.
