ByteDance Will Use TSMC's Services To Manufacture Their Own AI Processors

A few months ago, we reported that ByteDance, the parent company behind the short video service TikTok would be working with Broadcom to develop their own artificial intelligence processing component.

Recently, through a report by The Information, ByteDance seems to be developing two AI graphics cards, one for the purpose of machine learning and the other for the purpose of inference processing. Interestingly, for now, ByteDance is seen to be using 200 thousand NVIDIA H20 graphics cards, and intends to change these cards periodically.

According to the same report, ByteDance's first AI chips appear to be in the design and development phase, and are expected to be manufactured around 2026. It is no surprise that ByteDance will use TSMC's services to manufacture these AI processing chips.

It is also said that the chips will use the same N4/N5 process used to develop the latest NVIDIA Blackwell AI processing chips.

Speaking of Blackwell, one of the main reasons why ByteDance is seen developing their own AI chip is because although they have invested as much as $2 billion for 200 thousand NVIDIA H20 graphics cards, the transition to Blackwell graphics cards is seen as difficult due to the still very low stock of graphics cards, and will require too much time and money to get it.

It is expected that ByteDance will switch to using their own AI graphics cards in mid-2026.
