Lego game blocks will become more sustainable as they will no longer be produced using petroleum materials starting in 2032. Instead, the blocks will be produced from bio-resin based on cooking oil and waste fat from the food industry. Before this resin was found, Lego tested over 600 other materials that could replace petroleum-based materials.
Although it is more sustainable, it comes with a cost increase of up to 70% compared to the current cost of producing blocks. But the company is committed to absorbing the cost increase for now to ensure that product prices do not increase to the point of burdening customers.
Lego also wants to reduce their carbon emissions by 37% by 2032. Lego hopes that if this resin is also used by other manufacturers, the cost of producing it will be lowered.
