Meta Sues Irish Government For Not Encrypting User Passwords

Meta, the company behind various social media platforms and messaging services such as Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp has recently been sued by the Irish government for failing to encrypt the passwords of hundreds of users of their platforms.

This thing seems to have happened in 2019, which Meta has already reported about it to the country's Digital Protection Commission. This matter was investigated by the DPC and it was found that this matter affected hundreds of millions of Facebook Lite users, tens of thousands of Facebook and several million Instagram users.

This matter is taken very seriously, and the biggest issue is that Meta did not inform the DPC about this issue as soon as possible, and many details about this issue are still unknown. DPC also sued Meta because it also found that Meta failed to use appropriate password encryption technology to ensure that user accounts were not hacked.

This matter is seen to violate several DPC acts and also GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) in Europe where companies are supposed to keep user data confidential and not open like what Meta did.

The DPC announced that they will issue a full statement regarding the company's lawsuit soon.
