Minister – ArtStation Banned Due to KPDN Complaint Regarding Intellectual Property Infringement

Yesterday we reported that ArtStation's art portfolio site was suddenly blocked without an official statement from KKOM or SKMM as to why it was done. It poses an issue for site users who need it to get work and update portfolios. Late last night KKOM minister Fahmi Fadzil said ArtStation was blocked after receiving a complaint from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Malaysia regarding intellectual property infringement.

The reason given is puzzling because ArtStation is a professional site that has an easy IP infringement reporting system. Banning an entire site for one offense is extreme because IP violations also happen on YouTube, Facebook, TikTok and various other sites every day.

Using the logic of the answer given, all websites should be blocked immediately. At the time of writing, ArtStation was still blocked despite this action receiving scorn from the Malaysian digital art community on social media.

Regarding the DNS diversion issue that will be enforced on September 30, KKOM will hold a briefing with the media this afternoon. We will report the reason why it was also suddenly enforced without announcing it to the public right after the session ends.
