AMD Instinct MI325X AI Chip Launched as Blackwell Competitor

AMD's Instinct MI325X artificial intelligence (AI) chip was launched this morning as AMD's successor to NVIDIA's Blackwell chip. The AMD Instinct MI325X is built using the AMD CDNA architecture used in the AMD Instinct MI300X chip launched last year.

It is also equipped with 256GB HBM3E memory which according to AMD makes it faster when compared to the NVIDIA H200 chip. The MI325X is therefore marketed as a competitor to the NVIDIA Blackwell B200.

Production of the MI325X will begin before the end of 2024 with customers receiving the chip in the first quarter of 2025. Dell Technologies, Eviden, Gigabyte, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Lenovo, and Supermicro have already been confirmed as customers of this new chip.

AMD also said that the MI350 chip will be launched in 2025 and the MI400 in 2026. The MI400 will be built using the new AMD CDNA 4 technology which is expected to offer a 35x increase in inference capabilities compared to the previous generation.
