Apple Revokes Self-Driving Car Testing Permit

Apple canceled a project to build its own car this year even though it had been in the works since 2016. The immature self-driving technology and frequent changes in scope buried the desire of those who wanted to own an Apple-branded car. To further confirm that this car project has not continued, Apple has revoked their self-driving car test permit in California.

An application to cancel the project was filed on September 25th to the California JPJ and it was terminated on September 27th. The test permit was received in 2017 when it was originally due to expire in April 2025. With no more cars being developed, there is no reason to continue with the received permit.

So far only Huawei and Xiaomi are the two smartphone manufacturers that have successfully produced their own cars through the cooperation of local automotive manufacturers. Apple is reportedly working with Hyundai Kia to build the first self-driving electric car. But the Korean automotive giant refused to simply become a manufacturer for Apple, causing talks between the two companies to be halted.

Since then Hyundai has launched their own EV and managed to become one of the world's 10 largest EV manufacturers.
