Black Plate Sales Fall 33.3% This Year

In 2020, album sales in the vinyl format overtook compact disc sales for the first time since 1986. But after four years through the Renaissance era, vinyl sales are also up sharply this year according to data shared by Billboard.

Sales of black plates so far reached 23.3 million units compared to 34.9 million units in the same period of 2023. This is equivalent to a decrease of 33.3%. Album sales in CD form also decreased but only by 19.5% while digital purchases of music also decreased by 8.3% compared to last year.

Overall album sales in all formats in the US fell 23% Although vinyl sales are down, they still outsell compact discs. Analysts say the cost of living factor is the reason why album sales have suffered this year. In the case of black plates, the much more expensive selling price (starting at RM180 a piece in Malaysia) compared to other formats is a contributing factor.

At the same time, music streaming recorded a 7% increase. But older albums that were released more than 18 months ago are more streamed than the latest releases.
