Facebook currently has a reputation as a social media site for aunts and uncles and the elderly. This reputation is the reason why the number of young users on Facebook is lower than Snapchat and TikTok. This morning during the Facebook IRL event held in Texax, Meta announced an interface update to attract the attention of the younger generation of users.
The first change is to provide a special tab for "Local" that displays relevant content close to the user. Videos, events and even items in the Marketplace that are nearby will be displayed more clearly in this tab. The Local tab is only activated for users in 10 cities in the United States at this time before being expanded to other locations.
The Explore tab has also been given a new lease of life with an algorithm that will display content that is deemed most relevant to Facebook users. Meta says by focusing on content near location, interaction with more relevant events can be provided to users. Content is displayed in a grid arrangement similar to Pinterest and Lemon8 which is an Instagram competitor by Bytedance.
To give TikTok competition, Reels videos can also be viewed in full-screen mode. With this those who want to just watch videos on YouTube can do so locally. The change was made because according to Meta, at this point Facebook users spend 60% of their time in the application watching videos.
In Facebook Groups, the Group AI feature will be introduced later. Through this feature, questions that have been answered before will be able to be searched and given to new users of a Group. This latest feature is currently being tested in the United States and Canada.
