FIDO's New Protocol Allows Passkeys to be Exported and Imported

Two years ago the FIDO Alliance introduced a passkey system that replaced passwords with a more secure system. With passkey, users no longer need to type a password, instead the process of verifying identity is through a biometric system that is widely used in various modern devices.

This week the FIDO Alliance announced a new protocol that will allow passkeys to be exported and then imported into different password management systems. The two drafts proposed to support this feature are Credential Exchange Protocol (CXP) and Credential Exchange Format (CXF).

FIDO Alliance members 1Password, Apple, Bitwarden, Dashlane, Enpass, Google, Microsoft, NordPass, Okta, Samsung and SK Telecom need to provide feedback on CXP and CXF before implementation begins.

Since its introduction, passkey has been used to access 12 billion accounts and it is 75% faster than password input systems or authentication using OTP SMS.
