iOS 18 Makes It More Difficult for Apps to Access Contact Data on Devices

Among the features I like most about iOS devices are the security and privacy protections they offer. First and foremost is that iOS doesn't have silly ad displays. Then on iOS, any application has to ask the user's permission for it to track activity and if any application wants to access media files – the user can choose to allow all or some. Most recently, the same thing is activated for access to contacts stored in the device.

Contacts in the device include name, phone number, email address, home/office address, date of birth and many other important or sensitive information. In iOS 18, Apple tightened up the system of asking users for permission to access contacts. Users can now allow apps to access all contacts or only a select few. This is a good thing for users but a challenging thing for app developers again in the social media category.

Social media applications need to access the contact data in the user's device to disseminate to the public that their contacts have used the platform. In a New York Times report, on this new obstacle of Apple – almost 25% of users are found to no longer share contact data or only share less than 10. Do you think this is a good thing that Android devices should also join or vice versa?
