The Microsoft HoloLens mixed reality headset was first introduced in 2016 and three years later the HoloLens 2 was shown. The use of this Microsoft headset is not so focused on the common consumer market as it is more concerned with developers and even the military. Now after 8 years of HoloLens being introduced, Microsoft has finally decided to end this headset.
This means that there is no more production of new units and what is sold is only through existing stock. Software support for the first-generation HoloLens will end in December of this year, while HoloLens 2 will end on December 31, 2027. A successor to the HoloLens is also said to likely never arrive. On the other hand, the development of this headset will only continue for the military version which is IVAS.
With the headset industry starting to trend, as well as the development of smart glasses/AR glasses becoming more and more common – it is not sure if in the future Microsoft will have a new project to compete with the Meta Orion or in the coming AR glasses by Apple.
