FourSquare has now announced that it will end the FourSquare City Guide application effective December 15, 2024, and will focus on the Swarm application after that.
FourSquare was one of the most popular applications during the early smartphone era, where users could check in to a location, and collect badges as "Area Brothers". However, in 2014, they chose to separate the app, where the location check-in feature was moved to an app called Swarm, while FourSquare served as a local directory for discovering locations and points of interest.
With this change, FourSqare is expected to focus more on the Swarm application, and add a number of new features through the application. Previously, FourSquare was said to have laid off more than 100 employees – which may also coincide with this change in strategy.
