US Government Worried About Economic Dependence on Chinese Battery Technology

The United States government is now raising concerns about the dependence of various electric vehicle manufacturers on lithium battery technology led by China. It is said that there are economic risks to the United States, when depending on China, including it will make it difficult to develop the supply chain in the United States.

Through a report by the United States authorities seen by Wired, it is said that three Chinese companies, CATL, BYD and REPT have received assistance in various forms from China, to develop their enterprises to gain a market share in the United States. CATL rejected this claim.

As many are aware, today, the energy storage and battery industry is led by CATL and BYD, each said to have a market share of around 40% and 12%. In addition to batteries in electric cars, Chinese battery technology is also widely used for energy storage purposes.

Some analysts say the US government's move to help the local battery industry is laudable, but it will still struggle to compete with Chinese companies' offerings on cost. In addition, it is also believed that there has not been any incident where the battery management system data was sent to China, or could interfere with the infrastructure in the United States.
