Worldcoin has now been rebranded as World and a new Orb has been introduced along with a new service. What is World? It is a user authentication system for the era of artificial intelligence. It uses the user's eye biometric data to obtain a World ID to prove one's humanity.
The newly introduced Orb is a new scanning device that is easier and cheaper to develop. It also uses 30% less components than the original Orb. The orb is also equipped with Nvidia's robotics system and the new identity verification ball is expected to be widely offered.
At the same time, World also launched Orb on Demand (OoD) to provide more flexible identity verification access. Each user who has scanned their respective points will receive WLD cryptocurrency. To date, as many as 7 million users have been verified as real humans. In Malaysia, MIMOS will integrate World into Malaysia's digital infrastructure.
Although World looks interesting, it is plagued by controversy regarding the privacy and storage of users' biometric data. Due to this issue data collection in Portugal, Spain, Hong Kong and Kenya has been stopped. Meanwhile, investigations have been initiated by personal data authorities in the UK, France and South Korea regarding the security of Worldcoin user data.
