X/Twitter was banned from Brazil at the end of August after Elon Musk's social media platform refused to block several defamatory accounts and failed to appoint a representative to face several court cases. As a result X lost more than 22 million users as it is their sixth largest market as well as affecting advertising revenue.
Although Elon Musk initially refused to follow the Brazilian court order due to "freedom of speech", X finally submitted by appointing a representative and paying a fine after Starlink's account was frozen. X also agreed to block accounts allegedly spreading false information in Brazil. Because of this, the Brazilian court has now allowed X to return to operating in the country.
The pressure given is clearly effective and the complaints of more than 22 million users cannot be ignored. Immediately after the ban, more than 2 million new accounts on Bluesky were opened by users from Brazil. Obviously if it involves money and advertising, Elon Musk will end up with the command of a country.
Even so, in Malaysia X has been confirmed as the social media that most refuses to follow the instructions given by the authorities and Meta is the opposite.
