YouTube today announced they will introduce support for uploading vertical videos up to 3 minutes long, starting October 15, 2024. With this move, content producers can upload longer videos, and at the same time will make people spend more time on the platform.
With more people starting to watch video vertically, YouTube may see a demand for it, and lead to this new change. In addition, YouTube also said that it will improve the recommendation algorithm for longer Shorts in the coming months. In comparison, TikTok today allows many users to upload videos up to 10 minutes long.
For public users as well, YouTube announced that it will introduce a special option that reduces the display of Shorts on their respective timelines.
