Apple has reportedly submitted a plan to invest $10 million (RM44 million) in Indonesia to enable the iPhone 16 series to be sold in the country. The sale of the iPhone 16 was blocked by the Indonesian government last month because Apple did not fulfill its promise to invest 1.71 trillion Rupiah (~RM 489 million). So far Apple has invested as much as 1.48 trillion Rupiah (~RM 414 million) only.
The $10 million investment that will be made is in a factory manufacturing accessories and spare parts for Apple devices in Bandung. The Indonesian Ministry of Industry is evaluating the proposal with a decision expected to be given soon.
According to Indonesia's Domestic Component Level (TKDN) initiative, foreign companies must meet the requirement of 40% local content to operate in the country. In addition to the iPhone 16 series, the Google Pixel 9 series also received a similar fate in Indonesia due to failing to meet the requirements of TKDN.
