Cybersecurity Malaysia's (CSM) cyber security incident response center (Cyber999) recorded a total of 5,181 cyber security incidents in the ten months since the beginning of this year, as reported by Bernama. The top three incidents that contributed to the number included online fraud (3,483 cases), content-related and intrusions (480 cases), malicious code (403 cases), while the rest were other cases. Although there is an increase or decrease every month but on average the agency receives an average of 500 cases per month.
In this regard, CSM explained that fraud cases are the highest cases involving online purchase cases including love scams or love fraud among the many received in its report. Based on statistics in Perak alone, a total of 1,407 fraud cases were recorded until July 2024, with losses exceeding RM55.3 million. Therefore it is important to deal with the crime of online fraud and detect the modus operandi of the scammer. In particular, the crime of love scams has a big impact on female victims, especially those aged 41 to 50 years.
