European Commission Opens Investigation Against Corning Regarding Alleged Abuse of Position

The European Commission (European Commission) opened an investigation paper against Corning regarding the alleged abuse of its dominant position in the market for special protective glass used. Primarily for protecting mobile devices such as mobile phones, with Samsung and Apple using it extensively in their range of devices.

The EU expressed concern that Corning might enter into an anti-competitive exclusive supply agreement that would require device makers to source all or nearly all of their glass from Corning. Under the agreement, manufacturers will get rebates to buy Corning glass, and can only take a competitor's offer if Corning glass can't match the price.

It is seen as a matter of concern because Corning seems to be trying to exclude direct competitors thus reducing customer choice and restricting innovation to the detriment of consumers worldwide. If found guilty, Corning could be fined but still has the chance to address EU concerns with a commitment that could end the investigation.
