In dealing with various threats to cyber security, privacy and community, social media operators should also have to join hands to help from various aspects. For example, such as being more proactive in blocking harmful content, especially involving immoral and ethical activities that violate the laws of the country.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said social platform operators need to be more proactive in helping the government block any harmful content. He said this after his party found that social media platform operators are usually slow to act and only take down such content if they receive complaints from the public. While it should be prevented earlier to create a safe internet environment.
Meanwhile, he also voiced the view that social media platforms should use artificial intelligence technology to block harmful content. This also led him to say why he wanted all providers who met the conditions to be licensed automatically. Once thought the implementation of Application Service Provision Class License under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) is the right step.
The government previously announced that the implementation of licenses for social media services and internet messaging will come into effect from 1 January 2025, following the regulatory framework of the measure which was gazetted on 1 August. Accordingly, the operator was given a period of one month to give official feedback regarding the code of conduct related to the license before it is finalized later.
