Government Stays With Licensing of Social Media Services Effective January 1, 2025



The Minister of Communications, Fahmi Fadzil has now announced that the government will maintain its position to adopt a regulatory framework or also called licensing of social media services effective January 1, 2025. This step is emphasized as being important to overcome various problems in the internet, such as cyber bullying and others- another.



The minister also said that many cyberbullying activities now take place on social media, especially on Facebook, Instagram and even TikTok.


Under the new rules, all social media platforms or messaging apps with more than 8 million users will need to obtain a special license. Failure to obtain a license after 1 January 2025 is an offence, and appropriate legal action can be taken under Act 588 (Communications and Multimedia Act 1998).


For now, the social platform that has expressed its desire and commitment to register a license in Malaysia has not yet been announced.
