Did you know that the last time our identity card was updated was in 2012, when MyKad was introduced? MyKad introduces a built-in chip component that allows it to store more data, and until now, can be used as a Touch'n'Go card, and is even mandatory if you use the My50 transport service monthly pass.
Recently, The Edge has reported that the government is currently in the process of developing technology to update the existing MyKad system.
This matter was confirmed by Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah in the Dewan Rakyat session today. He said that this new identity card, when it is introduced, will replace the existing MyKad, and among its important functions is to prevent identity fraud.
"It is also to curb any attempt to forge and misuse MyKad which is an important document for Malaysia," he said in response to a question from Manndzri Nasib (BN-Tenggara) during an oral question and answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today.
He further said that for this new MyKad, it will come with a new design, including the use of new polycarbonate materials, the use of holograms and laser engraving and additional storage so that this MyKad can be used to store more data and also for the purpose of additional built-in security.
With this, it is also expected to help in reducing the incidence of identity card forgery. The Director General of the National Registration Department, Badrul Hisham Alias was also previously reported to have said that all functions of the old MyKad will be abolished once the new generation MyKad is introduced to overcome the issue of forgery of citizenship identity cards.
Speaking about the cost of replacing the old MyKad with the new version, Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul also said that the NRD is currently conducting a market study to ensure that the implementation of the new MyKad meets the best benefit value so as not to burden the people and the government.
