The Minister of Communications, Fahmi Fadzil now insists the government cannot give more time for social media licensing, in an effort to make a platform more responsible in dealing with crimes, including involving fraud, gambling and pornographic content.
This step is parallel in ensuring a healthy and safe environment for the people, especially for children and families on social media.
Fahmi Fadzil said the Meta side asked for more time, but to be honest the government cannot give more time. It was also confirmed that the Malaysian government, including the Minister of Communications himself, had discussed with Meta in dealing with various problems, but various reasons were given by the platform provider.
The government aims to implement a license for social media service providers with more than 8 million users, effective January 1, 2025, and anyone who violates it can be prosecuted. For now, the code of conduct related to social media licensing has not yet been published for public viewing.
