It's time to say goodbye to the natural gas vehicle (NGV) era in Malaysia on 1 July 2025. On this date, NGV vehicles will no longer be allowed to be registered or licensed in the country.
According to the Minister of Transport, Anthony Loke said this decision was made in a meeting of the Council of Ministers after taking into account safety factors for users and the public. PETRONAS will also phase out the retail supply of NGV in the market before the supply is completely terminated from 1 July 2025.
No more retail NGV supplies will be offered. Previously, some PETRONAS stations had already started converting NGV fueling equipment to EV charging stations. Simultaneously with this announcement, the NGV Vehicle Transition Assistance Program was introduced by PETRONAS NGV Sdn Bhd (PNGV) as part of efforts to help NGV vehicle users in the process of transitioning to petrol, diesel or other vehicles.
At this point there are 44,383 active vehicles using NGV in Malaysia. 9,509 of them are taxis and self-driving cars, 32,137 private registration vehicles, 2,150 buses and lorries and 587 vehicle/machinery units. Around 2008 the use of NGV increased due to the price of petrol and diesel floated by the government.
Through this program three aid packages will be offered. The first package is for NGV taxi drivers. Eligible NGV taxi drivers will receive a Setel e-voucher worth RM3,000 on a one-off basis which will be credited through the Setel application.
The second package is specifically for owners of dual-fuel vehicles according to terms and conditions. NGV kit removal services at designated workshops will be provided free of charge to dual-fuel vehicles.
Finally, there is a third package specifically for eligible NGV single fuel vehicle owners who will receive a one-off payment. Applications for this program must be made before December 31, 2024.
