Oppo Find X8 Review – A Handsome Compact Camera

The Oppo Find X8 was launched simultaneously to the global market with the Find X8 Pro yesterday in Bali. As usual, when two models come out, there is always the question of which device is more worthwhile. What I can say at the beginning of this review is that in terms of design, the Find X8 is the more handsome looking device but what about its other performance? Here is the full review of the Oppo Find X8.

Screen

Find X8 Pro has a 6.59-inch LTPO AMOLED 1.5K screen with a refresh rate of 120Hz, brightness up to 4500 nits in addition to supporting ProXDR, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision technologies. The screen is of the flat type which is different from the 2.5D curved screen on the X8 Pro. I prefer the flat screen because it does not have the issue of content overflowing to the sides.

The device can display HDR content in apps like Netflix, Max, Prime Video and YouTube without any issues. It is also very responsive with no stutter. The peak brightness of 4500 nits ensures that the screen content can be viewed even in very bright conditions.

In addition, I give praise to the haptic system that feels very realistic. It is comparable to the haptic experience on an iPhone. The included fingerprint biometric system also operates quickly despite being of the optical type.

Design

The design of this device is completely different from the X8 Pro. First of all, the side of the X8 is completely flat with only circles on all four corners. Sorry but in the hand it feels like an iPhone 16 or Pixel 9 Pro XL because it is very similar. Therefore, as a user of both devices it feels practically the same and this also means that the X8 is very comfortable in the hand. Given a choice, I prefer the design of the X8 over the X8 Pro with its rounded sides.

The similarity lies in the rear panel which does not have any gimmicky elements. There is no panel with a two-tone color, vegan leather finish, stone-like panel or glass panel. The polycarbonate panel on the back of our black X8 looks like a piece of slate that is not shiny and does not trap dirt easily.

On the right side there are audio and power adjustment buttons, both of which are comfortable to use. On the left side there is also an Alert Slider drop-down button used to mute device notifications. A feature that was once exclusive to OnePlus devices is now lent to Oppo. Next on top there is a speaker hole and an infrared emitter. Finally, on the bottom there is a USB-C charging hole, another speaker hole and a tray for dual nano SIM cards.

The bump on the back houses the tri-camera system but the bump is not very high when compared to the Xiaomi 14 Ultra and Vivo X200 Pro. The device feels comfortable and balanced in the hand. There is no issue with the device's head becoming heavy. On the table, the bump does not cause the device to tilt badly. A frame is provided by Oppo that will ensure that the surface of the device's rear panel is flat at all times.

Another difference between the X8 and X8 Pro is that there is no camera button on the right side. This iPhone 16 series-like feature is only given to the Pro model, it seems. The body of this relatively thin device also passes the IP69 standard. No need to worry about damage if this device falls into a pool, let alone just a splash of rain.

Operating System and User Experience

The device comes with the ColorOS 15 operating system based on Android 15. This is the best iteration of ColorOS I have used since I first reviewed the Oppo N1 device a decade ago. It feels very smooth. I can say that it is smoother than the Pixel 9 Pro XL and Samsung Galaxy S24. In terms of smoothness, I can compare it to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The Find X8 is the first Android device to provide a UI smoothness similar to iOS.

I did not experience any app issues and the device stopped until it had to be restarted like in the Find X8 Pro review. This makes me wonder if the Find X8 Pro unit I received was actually the one with the problem.

While the smoothness is the same, there are some elements of friction

For the sake of smoothness, there are several interface elements that have been borrowed from iOS 18. The tray for quick controls is now more similar to iOS than Android 15. RAM can also be added by another 16GB virtually. As an iOS 18 user, I can say that this is not a negative thing because the interface elements used are very ergonomic.

There are still Android features such as Multi Window, gestures, and Circle to Search. These are not all new features. What is new is the more dynamic lock screen customization, again borrowing iOS elements that allow the front object to cover some of the clock widget elements, for example.

Also introduced is Aqua Dynamics, which is similar to Dynamic Island. So far, this feature is supported by Spotify, audio recording applications, and also WiFi hotspot sharing. Finally, the Touch to Share feature that allows file sharing like AirDrop between Find X8 and iPhone. I can say that this feature is interesting, but it is still not as smooth as real AirDrop. iPhones need to download the O+ Connect application first before this feature can be used.

The Find X8 operating system is one of the notable strengths of the Find X8 because it is very impressive. What's a little disappointing is that the Find X8 only supports 5 Android version updates and 6 years of security patches. It's not as good as 7+7 like what Google and Samsung provide for their flagship devices.

AI Features

Artificial intelligence (AI) features are now mandatory on modern devices and the Find X8 has some that I find interesting. Blurry images can be fixed with AI Ublur. If there are unwanted objects, they can be erased with AI Eraser. Enhanced Clarity AI also improves the sharpness of the image when taking a picture.

Next, reflections in the image can also be removed using Reflections Remover. In addition, there are features that help summarize websites, produce transcripts from recorded audio. All these features are not new for 2024 but will ensure that Oppo does not lag behind its competitors.

Benchmarks

The Find X8 is powered by the Mediatek Dimensity 9400 chip which is a competitor to the Snapdragon 8 Elite and Apple A18 Pro. It is matched with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB of UFS 4.0 internal storage which is quite fast. So the benchmark test I did only compare Find X8 with Oppo Find X8 Pro, Realme GT7 Pro and Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Antutu 3D

Oppo Find X8 – 2,176,221

Oppo Find X8 Pro – 2,672,191

Realme GT7 Pro – 2,642,097

iPhone 16 Pro Max – 1,720,751

Oppo FInd X8 – 2763/8437

Oppo Find X8 Pro – 2779/8044

Realme GT7 Pro – 2789/9002

iPhone 16 Pro Max – 3359/8129

3D Mark Wildlife Extreme

Oppo Find X8 – 6100

Oppo Find X8 Pro – 6033

Realme GT 7 Pro – 5922

iPhone 16 Pro Max – 4560

Geekbench AI

Oppo iInd X8 – 1718/ 1730/2140

Oppo Find X8 Pro – 1728/1740/2147

Realme GT 7 Pro – 2307/2323/3027

iPhone 16 Pro Max– 4516/7744/6204

The benchmark scores of the Find X8 are very satisfactory with the scores recorded being comparable to the Find X8 Pro, GT7 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. The device does not heat up when used to run common applications or high-performance games. COD Mobile, COD Warzone Mobile, Genshin Impact, MLBB and many more can be played at the highest settings without any issues.

If you are a gamer, the Find X8 will not disappoint. Our only issue is the device heating up when using the camera application. It heats up quite excessively to the point of being uncomfortable to hold.

Camera

The rear camera consists of a 50MP OIS wide-angle lens, a 50MP ultra-wide and a 50MP OIS 3X telephoto. There is no 6X telephoto lens like on the Find X8 Pro. On the front, there is a 32MP sensor in the camera hole. The Hasselblad camera system appears again with several photography modes and film simulation built into the camera application. The results of the pictures taken are as follows.

The picture quality looks sharp, the colors are vivid and the HDR support does not disappoint. In various situations the pictures taken do not disappoint. The night mode recording does not have noise issues, only I can see the blooming effect when there is a light source.

There is an AI mode that can improve the picture quality but when zoomed in at the highest settings, the final image looks fake because it is drawn by artificial intelligence. Through the collaboration with Hasselblad, the X Pan feature returns along with presets for situations taking firecracker explosions, concerts and silhouettes.

Audio

Although both stereo speakers fire to the sides, the audio is still louder through the bottom speaker, causing an imbalance. Even so, the audio is still clear and can distinguish instruments well. Only the bass I feel is less stinging. It is a little strange that the screen supports Dolby Vision but the audio does not have Dolby Atmos. Oppo uses its own system that sets the audio in Smart, Movie, Gaming and Music modes. The Holo Audio mode also provides spatial audio if the audio is streamed to several audio accessories simultaneously.

Battery

The Find X8 is equipped with a 5630mAh battery from the silicon-carbon type which provides high energy density in a smaller size. Usually, devices of the size of the Find X8 are rarely equipped with a battery of this size. In normal use, the device can last all day with SOT up to 8 hours. The 80W SuperVOOC charging provided allows the battery to be charged in about 40 minutes which is quite fast.

Also supported is 50W wireless charging and reverse up to 10W. On the back panel there is a magnet allowing some of Oppo's new accessories like Apple MagSafe to be used. Even MagSafe chargers are compatible with the FInd X8 series.

What's in the Box?

1 X Oppo Find X Pro.

1 X SuperVOOC Charger.

1 X Protective Case

1 X USB-C Cable.

1 X Manual

1 X Warranty Card.

1 X SIM Pin

Conclusion

The Oppo Find X8 is a more compact and affordable version of the Find X8 Pro. I have to say I prefer the Find X8's flatter body design which makes it comfortable to hold. The device's Dimensity 9400 processor performance is also on par with the more expensive model while the camera capabilities are only lacking in terms of no further zoom and just one telephoto lens. At RM3699 it's competitive when compared to the Vivo X200 and Realme GT7 Pro.
