The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM) today announced that they have carried out various detailed processes from technical and commercial aspects in selecting Malaysia's second 5G mobile network provider and operator, and have chosen U Mobile Sdn Bhd to implement it.
At the same time, MCMC emphasized that U Mobile is allowed to collaborate with other telecommunication companies to take advantage of each other's advantages in the implementation of Malaysia's Second 5G Network - but subject to MCMC's permission and confirmation. With this announcement, we may hear more about the next process, and the timeline set for U Mobile to achieve widespread 5G coverage in Malaysia.
Previously, initially Malaysia had a single operator for the 5G network in Malaysia, and had chosen Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) to implement it. DNB itself is offered shares and holdings to other telecommunications companies in an effort to develop the network together. However, to avoid monopoly, the government has announced the implementation of Malaysia's second 5G network after DNB coverage reached 80%.
Various parties participated in the bid to develop Malaysia's second 5G network, including CelcomDigi and Maxis. With today's announcement, it looks like U Mobile will develop it, and it's unknown if they'll open it up for co-development or vice versa.
