The Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM) has given one month to all social media platforms to give official feedback regarding the code of conduct involving social media platforms that will come into effect from January 2025. The Minister of Communications, Fahmi Fadzil said, one month time is given to all service providers before requiring them to be registered with MCMC for licensing purposes.
After the matter is finalized, the code of conduct will be published and all qualified providers will be required to register. The code of conduct is a guideline that must be followed by social media platform providers including being responsive to any complaints received from users, Failure to do so may result in a number of actions that can be taken including the possibility of being fined.
Fahmi added that most social media providers are seen to be cooperating well in providing feedback on the matter. However, there are still a handful of providers who are still hesitating, and some even refuse to express support because they feel there is no need to comply with the established rules. However, MCMC has the power to oblige them to comply with the laws of the country.
Earlier, Fahmi also reminded that the licensing requirement aims to ensure service providers are responsible, as well as play an important role in creating a safer digital platform for users, especially children and families.
