Sony Alpha 1 Mark II Launches With 50MP Sensor, 8K Recording and AI Assist

The Sony Alpha 1 Mark II was launched today as an updated model for the A1 Mark 1 which was launched in 2021. It brings several improvements to make it among the mirrorless cameras of choice for content producers.

In terms of design, the Alpha 1 II camera maintains the design of other Alpha E-mount cameras, but in terms of internal specifications, it uses an Exmor RS 50.1MP Stacked CMOS sensor and a BIONZ XR image processor capable of taking pictures at a rate of 30FPS. This is the same as the Mark I but according to Sony the focusing system is now faster.

Sony says it can track eyes 50% faster in birds, 30% in animals and 30% in humans with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). The focusing system can now automatically identify the subject without the need for user intervention. The IBIS system is also better with support up to 8.5 stops.

In terms of video capabilities, the Alpha 1 II camera can record video at 8K 30p, 4K 120p and 10-bit 4:2:2 resolutions. Pre-shot mode allows a picture of the subject to be taken seconds before the shutter button is pressed.

Speaking of buttons, some additional control buttons are also provided along with a redesigned body to make it more ergonomic. In addition, the body is also lighter at around 743 grams without the lens. On the back, the touch LCD panel can now rotate multi-directionally.

According to Sony, the Alpha 1 II camera will go on sale in December 2024 at a price of $6500 (~RM 29,000) for the body only, which is the same as the introductory price of the Mark I. In Malaysia, the Mark I is sold at a price of RM27,599 and it is hoped that no change in price will be made later.
