Study Finds Standing Desks Don't Make Users Healthier

Standing desks are said to be the healthiest way to do work with it becoming a trend especially after the pandemic. Doing work while sitting is believed to cause various health problems due to the sedentary lifestyle. However, recent studies have found that the use of standing desks does not actually improve the health of its users.

The study was conducted by researchers from the New University of Sydney involving data from 83,013 individuals collected for up to eight years using smart watches. It found that those who stood for up to 2 hours a day did not reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease compared to people who sat for up to 10 hours a day. On the other hand, standing for more than 2 hours a day increases the risk of circulatory problems related to standing, such as varicose veins and deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

However, researchers have confirmed that sitting for more than 10 hours a day will increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Researchers suggest those who work sitting to take a break to walk, stand and perform movements such as climbing stairs.

Heavy exercise for 6 minutes or moderate exercise for 30 minutes every day can reduce the risk of heart disease even in people who sit for up to 11 hours a day. The research paper was published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity
