Last week, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission announced that local telecommunications company U Mobile has been selected as Malaysia's second 5G network developer.
Many questions have been asked about the company's ability to develop this second network, including the high ownership percentage by the Singapore company, Straits Mobile Services which was previously seen as high as 49 percent. After being selected as the second network developer, U Mobile then announced that the ownership percentage of the company had been reduced to 20 percent to minimize the conflict of ownership of foreign companies.
Answering a question from Pasir Gudang MP, Hassan Abdul Karim at the Dewan Rakyat session, Minister of Communications Fahmi Fadzil said that he and Deputy Minister of Communications, Teo Nie Ching were not involved and involved in the selection process and had allowed SKMM to evaluate the companies themselves. which is most suitable for developing the second 5G network.
He also explained that MCMC is responsible for taking into account business aspects, technical capabilities, customer satisfaction and performance when evaluating all tender documents sent by these telecommunication companies.
