TikTok Ordered To Shut Down Operations In Canada For Safety Reasons

TikTok was ordered by the Canadian government to close their business in the country. The order was issued because TikTok is allegedly having a negative impact on Canadian security. The closure is using the Investment Canada Act which allows for the review of foreign investments that could endanger national security.

Decisions are based on information and evidence gathered throughout the review and on the advice of the Canadian security and intelligence community and other government partners. Although TikTok operations have to be shut down, the app can still be used. Canadian TikTok representatives said the shutdown would put hundreds of staff out of work.

Meanwhile in the United States, President Biden's administration forced Bytedance to close the TikTok business or face the application being banned from operating. Like Canada, America also uses the national security risk excuse. TikTok has sued the US government over the sales order it issued for violating the right to free speech.

With Trump now set to become America's 47th president next year, it is unknown if this will continue as he has previously said TikTok needs to stay to provide competition to Facebook.
