Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election may also benefit TikTok. According to The Washington Post, the administration of America's 47th president plans not to continue the Joe Biden administration's efforts to ban the platform used by more than 180 million users in the country.
Among Trump's campaign promises is that if he wins he will not ban TikTok. According to him, this will only benefit companies like Meta. Trump is believed to still hold a grudge against Meta for banning his Facebook and Instagram accounts in 2020 for urging followers to riot on January 6.
If the promise is kept, it will be one of Trump's strangest decisions. During his first term as president, he forced Bytedance to transfer American user data to Oracle's browser. He also forced part of the business to be sold to a United States entity.
The Biden administration took a more drastic step by giving Bytedance until January 2025 to sell its entire TikTok business if it wants to continue operating in America. The move is believed to be driven by TikTok, which produces content that is inconsistent with national policies such as the Gaza conflict and is feared to be a medium for the spread of Chinese propaganda.
